Welcome!

In the past twenty-eight years of being a pastor I have spent a lot of time at funeral homes and in cemeteries. Every time I preside at a funeral I am reminded of the brevity of life and the need (and it is a need) to really live and enjoy life. An insightful proverb that I’ve come to appreciate over the years says, “No one on their deathbed ever said, ‘Gee, I wish I had spent more time at the office.’”

A variation on a familiar prayer that I often refer to says, God, grant me the serenity to prioritize the things I cannot delegate, The courage to say no when I need to, And the wisdom to know when to go home.

Why is this worth pondering? Because life is too short, the kids grow up too fast, the hours needed to fulfill a relationship are too few as it is, and too much time is spent saying, “If only I had…” instead of “I’m glad I did…”

Jesus was the best example of one who took time off to enjoy life and bring joy to the lives of others. He was never in a hurry, even if it was life or death. He never passed on an opportunity to go to a party or to get together with friends for a meal. He knew the value of taking a nap and taking a slow walk. When He worked, He worked hard and when He played He threw Himself into it 100%.

Before summer is over take some time out…or away…or off. The same old job, the same old stuff will be there when you get back…but you will be different. Let go a little now so you can get a better grip later on.
